Travel Journal

There are 3 travel journal assignments, each worth 5% of your course grade. 

  • Preparation - due by November 28 at the latest
    • Join a group of about 3 to 5 people in the class
    • Using your Vietnam travel books or various online resources, identify all of the following on a downloadable map that you can access even if your phone is offline (e.g. in airplane mode):
      • our hotel, in two formats:
        • one you can read on a map on your phone
        • one with the name and address of our hotel, written in Vietnamese, in a format that can be easily accessed with your phones offline, suitable for showing to a Vietnamese taxi driver (my advice is to store it as a picture, saved to your phone)
      • at least 3 restaurants within walking distance that your group can have dinner at
      • at least 3 tourist sites of interest and a plan for how to get there
      • at least 1 convenience store outside the hotel where you can buy bottled water and sundries 
    • To complete this assignment, you must each send me an email, cc'ing the other people in your group, with all of the above information written out
       
  • Globalization - due January 13 
    • Write a short essay of at least 500 words, illustrated by at least three pictures that you took on the trip, that shows something about rising international economic connections
    • At a minimum, your essay must cover the international movement of capital, goods, and people 

  • Inequality - due January 13
    • Write a short essay of at least 500 words, illustrated by at least three pictures that you took on the trip, that shows something about economic inequality within Vietnam
    • At a minimum, your essay must cover the potential effects of uneven growth and something about the ration of capital to labor; you could also consider the role of corruption or geographic or political divisions
